The Three Views in Booklist Online

There are three views that show search results in Booklist Online:

Citation (includes bibliographic information only)

Citation+Partial Text (includes bibliographic information and the first 20 words of the review)

Citation+Full Text (includes full bibliographic citation and full Booklist review)

Citation Only View

After performing any Booklist Online search, whether Quick Search or Advanced Search, you will likely see a screen similar to that below:

Working with Search Results - Citation View

The Citation Only View is used automatically as the first view after a search; it shows results as bibliographic records only, with the notation of when the item was reviewed in Booklist.

Citation+Partial Text View

Use the drop-down Display menu at the top left of the list to change the view to Citation+Partial Text view, as seen below:

Working with Search Results - Citation+Partial Text View

The Citation+Partial Text view shows the same bibliographic information as in the Citation view, but in addition it shows the first 20 words of the Booklist review itself.

Return to the Citation view by changing the drop-down menu from Citation+Partial Text to Citation.

Citation+Full Text View or Booklist Review

The third way to see search results is with the complete Booklist review itself. Access the Citation+Full Text view by clicking on the underlined, hyperlinked title of any citation in the Citation or Citation+Partial Text views, or by selecting the record using the checkbox and clicking VIEW SELECTED RECORDS. The Citation+Full Text view for Rights Gone Wrong: How Law Ignores Common Sense and Undermines Social Justice appears below:

Working with Search Results - Citation+Full Text View or Booklist Review

In the Citation+Full Text view, you can read the entire review as it was first published in Booklist.

Find In a Library

By clicking on the ISBN in this view (example: 9780374250355), you will be taken to a page that shows libraries in your geographic area that own the book you have selected. This service, Find in a Library, is provided through WorldCat, developed by OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. and its member libraries. If you have not visited the Find in a Library site before, you will need to enter your ZIP code to activate the service. The Find in a Library with WorldCat page opens in a new browser window, so you can toggle back and forth between your Booklist Online results and WorldCat, if you wish.

Return to your previous results screen by clicking BACK TO RESULTS in the upper left of the screen.

FIND MORE BOOKS AND FEATURES

In Citation+Full Text view there are usually one or more links to help you find reviews, features, or other information related to the review in hand. These include:

Fnd more titles by (this author)

Search for Similar Titles

Clicking on the Find more titles by (this author) link will initiate a new search for other books in Booklist Online by the same author as the item you have just reviewed. The results list, shown in Citation view if there are more than one item, will include the item you have just reviewed. If the item you have reviewed has more than one author, Find more titles by (this author) works for the first author only. Return to the Citation+Full Text display of the original title by using the Back button on your browser.

Working with Search Results - Search for Similar Titles

Example: Clicking the link to find more titles by this author in the sample above will search Booklist Online to find other reviews of items by Molly Ivins.

Depending on the title, you may also initiate a search for similar titles on various criteria. Use the Search for Similar Titles box below the Find more titles by (this author) link to select and weight the criteria you want to emphasize in your search, and then click the Search Now button. A search for similar titles to the above book by Molly Ivins, selecting nonfiction adult titles, and designating Executive power and 1st-10th Amendments with number 1 priority brought 19 results.

CHANGING THE DISPLAY SCREEN

Above we showed one way to change the display screen in Booklist Online (by switching between the Citation and Citation+Partial Text views). There are other features that allow you to adjust the number of citations displayed and the order in which they are displayed.

Titles Per Page and Navigating Pages

Search results are displayed by default in groups of 25 per page. The screen below shows the top of the initial screen of results for a Quick Search on “web” in the title of adult reviews.

Working with Search Results - Titles per Page results list

At the top of the screen is a search report that says the Quick Search on “web” returned 61 results. The initial page shows results numbered 1 through 25 (you need to scroll down to see results numbered 4 through 25). You may proceed to other pages of results by clicking one of the numbers in the page number display at the top, or to the next page in sequence by clicking the Next Page link. From all but the first page of the display, you can also click on Previous Page. These page number navigation features are also available at the bottom of each page.

Below is the bottom of the same page for the Quick Search on “web”, showing results 21 through 25. The default number of results to show is up to 25. You may change the number of titles displayed per page by using the drop-down menu in the Titles Per Page box at the bottom center of search results pages. Select 50, 75, or 100.

Sort

The default sort order is by publication date, with the most recent items first. Therefore, in a list of search results, you will see a group of items published in October 2011 before the group published in May 2011, and so on.

You may use the drop-down menu in the Sort box at the top and bottom of the Citation and Citation+Partial Text search results screens to change the sort order from Date to Title or Author/Editor.

WORKING WITH SEARCH RESULTS

While reviewing your search results, you can save, download, print, and e-mail one result or selected groups of results.

Selecting Records

You can select a single item to work with by manually clicking in the checkbox next to that numbered item in the Citation or Citation+Partial Text views. You can also use the SELECT buttons at the top and bottom of each page to automatically select items or clear selections. SELECT ALL TITLES selects all titles in the results list, placing a check in the box next to their number, regardless of which page of search results they may be on. SELECT ALL TITLES ON THIS PAGE will do the same thing, but only for the titles on the page you are viewing. CLEAR SELECTED will remove all your checks, regardless of which page they appear on and whether you used manual or automatic selection.

Working with Search Results - Selecting Records

Clicking the VIEW SELECTED ITEMS bar below the SELECT options will display the selected results, page by page, in Citation+Full Text view. Only one full item is displayed per page; you can move forward and backward in your group of selections by using the PREVIOUS and NEXT links at the top of the page. Any actions performed on records in VIEW SELECTED ITEMS affect only the one visible item.

Working with Search Results - View Selected Items

The image above shows the first of 10 items in a VIEW SELECTED ITEMS grouping. You can move through your group by clicking PREVIOUS or NEXT. Return to the original search results by clicking BACK TO RESULTS.

Manipulating Records

Below the VIEW SELECTED ITEMS bar are four operations that you can use to manage your selected search results.

Working with Search Results - Manipulating Records

ADD TO LIST allows you to save search results to one or several lists that you create. You may save up to 1000 items in a list, and the list will be available to you when you log in to Booklist Online as an individual user. At that time, you will be able to view and work with the items in your list(s) using the full capabilities of Booklist Online.

When you first use ADD TO LIST, you will be asked to create a new list and give it a name, and you will have the opportunity to provide a description for the list. After you have created one or more lists, you will be offered the opportunity to add your selected items to a previously created list or to create a new one. Click CONTINUE to finish adding to a list. You will be returned to the results page you were on previously to adding records to the list. You must be logged in as an individual user to use ADD TO LIST.

You can access previously saved lists from any page of Booklist Online by clicking the MY LISTS tab toward the right of the top navigation bar.

DOWNLOAD creates a Microsoft Office Excel Comma Separated Values File with your selected search results in grid format, by fields. This format facilitates adding records to any electronic bibliographic files you maintain, and further manipulation of large numbers of results by various criteria. At this time, only bibliographic information is available in the file.

When you click on DOWNLOAD, an immediate download will be initiated. You will be asked whether you want to open or save the file, which is named content.csv, and you must click Open, Save, or Cancel. If saving the file on your computer, you should rename the file to something you will recognize.

PRINT creates a printer-friendly version of your selected search results. Click the PRINT button to open a separate browser window showing the selected records. You may use the drop-down menu to switch between the Citation view and the Citation+Full Text view. When the screen shows the view you want, click the PRINT link. Your browser print utility will open and you can select the options you want to print at your local printer. When you are finished printing, close the Print box yourself by using the X in the top right box or File | Close.

You must allow pop-ups in both your Web browser and your Internet security software to use the PRINT utility.

EMAIL allows you to send records to yourself or others electronically. When you click on the EMAIL button a screen will pop up and you must enter the To: email address, and accept or change the default From: email address (the one associated with this login). You may also enter a subject line for the email, and enter brief comments. Click SEND EMAIL NOW to send the email. If your screen shows Citation view prior to sending the email, you will receive only the bibliographic information. If you are in Citation+Partial Text or Citation+Full Text view, you will receive the full review.

You must allow pop-ups in both your Web browser and your Internet security software to use the EMAIL utility.

Save Search

A Save Search link appears above the page number navigation area at the top of Citation and Citation+Partial Text screens. Clicking on Save Search allows you to save the search strategy you have just used to create the results viewed on that page—you do not save the results themselves. You will be taken to a page where you have the opportunity to name the search strategy and give it a brief description. When you access your list of saved searches later and choose a search to run again, the search form will be automatically filled in with the same strategy. Save Search is especially valuable when you have created a complicated Advanced Search or when you have a search that you want to update periodically.

Access previously saved searches by going to Advanced Search and clicking the black SAVED SEARCHES tab at the top right of the Advanced Search Reviews page.

You must be logged in as an individual user to use the Save Search feature.
